We’re Switched On

After 28 years of teaching, the one thing I know for sure is that no two days and no two children, are ever the same.

At Olderfleet our ‘We’re Switched On’ approach isn’t just a statement but something I’ve seen evolve and strengthen over time. It reflects what great teaching is about, being present, being responsive and being ready to adapt in the moment!

Children (and adults!) don’t arrive at school as fixed versions of themselves. They arrive carrying challenges, experiences and emotions that shift daily. Us being switched on means knowing that learning doesn’t happen in isolation from all of that.

I have learned that the most impactful moments in the classroom often aren’t the ones you planned in detail but when you notice the class just isn’t getting it yet and adjust your approach or when you seize an unexpected moment of curiosity or even when you simply take time to just listen!

At Olderfleet this mindset is part of our being. In every class, every day we do our best to meet children where they are, not just academically but also emotionally and socially. This can mean thinking on your feet to adapt lessons (even abandoning lessons!) offering reassurance, providing challenges or just simply knowing a child needs a different kind of support.

Experience has taught me that being switched on isn’t about having all the answers but about being reflective and willing to respond to what’s in front of you.

Experience has taught me that being switched on isn’t about having all the answers but about being reflective and willing to respond to what’s in front of you. Education is not static, and children most definitely aren’t either! Life changes, children change, and we as teachers must change with them.

After more than two decades (nearly three!) in the classroom, I am still learning, and I am proud to be part of The Olderfleet Family who are switched on.
