At Olderfleet Primary, our approach to SEAG preparation is guided by a clear and simple belief: strong foundations must come first. 

When I set out to develop our specialist provision within the mainstream setting at Olderfleet Primary, I was clear on one thing from the very beginning: this could not be an add-on. It had to be a true part of our school. A space not set apart, but one that all the children and staff in our mainstream saw as part of daily school life.

“We say don’t smile until Christmas, but in your case you just shouldn’t smile.”

That’s the instruction I was given at the start of my first teaching job when I was a very young looking 21 year old. Behaviour in school was about adult control and pupil compliance.

One of our core values as a school is “We Aim High”, and in Primary 6, this value is woven into everything we do. For our pupils, aiming high means believing in themselves, setting goals, and working hard to achieve them — both inside and outside the classroom.

After 28 years of teaching, the one thing I know for sure is that no two days and no two children, are ever the same. At Olderfleet our ‘We’re Switched On’ approach isn’t just a statement but something I’ve seen evolve and strengthen over time. It reflects what great teaching is about, being present, being responsive and being ready to adapt in the moment!  

One of our core values as a school is “We are family”, and in Year 6, this is something we experience every day. Our classroom is more than a place for lessons and learning — it is a space where children feel safe, cared for and valued, and where strong relationships are built on trust, love, care and respect.

If you attended primary school in the last 20 years you will likely be familiar with pupil of the week awards. These are usually given out during a celebration assembly and can be for anything. Every child in the class will get one at some point in the school year.
