At Olderfleet Primary, our approach to SEAG preparation is guided by a clear and simple belief: strong foundations must come first. We are proud of our academic outcomes, but we are equally committed to nurturing confident, capable and well‑rounded children who are ready for the next stage of their education and beyond.
Putting Quality Teaching First
Everything begins with high‑quality teaching of the curriculum. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring that literacy, numeracy and thinking skills are taught thoroughly and securely. Before our children are asked to perform under timed conditions, they must first understand what they are learning and why it matters.
By prioritising depth of understanding over speed, we help our children build confidence and resilience, qualities that extend far beyond a single assessment.
A Thoughtful and Balanced Approach to Assessment
We deliberately avoid overwhelming children with constant testing. Instead, assessment is introduced gradually and carefully, giving our children time to become familiar with formats, pacing and expectations in a calm and supportive way.
This measured approach allows children to:

View assessments as manageable challenges rather than sources of anxiety

Preparation Without Pressure
In the summer, our children receive an optional revision pack rather than test papers. This is designed to consolidate key skills, reinforce learning and maintain balance. The emphasis remains on confidence and readiness, not number‑crunching or excessive practice.
As part of our preparation, we also explicitly teach exam technique, including:
Effective time management
Careful reading and interpretation of questions
Strategies for tackling different question styles
Underlining key words
By teaching these skills in advance, our children are better equipped to perform at their best when assessments do take place.
Avoiding Test Fatigue
We are mindful that our children perform best when learning feels purposeful and balanced. By limiting unnecessary testing and focusing on quality preparation, we help prevent test fatigue and keep motivation high.
We keep in mind that many pupils also engage in tutoring outside school. Our aim is always to support our children’s wellbeing alongside their academic progress.
