Year 6 – Our September Journey
September has been a busy and exciting month for Year 6 as we settled into our new school year and got stuck into lots of interesting learning!
In Literacy, we have been developing our understanding of how language works. We explored morpheme matrices, practised identifying the subjects and objects in sentences and investigated simple and continuous verb tenses. We have also begun learning about report writing, looking at the features and language needed to create informative, factual reports.
In Numeracy, we have been working hard to build strong foundations and improve our times table knowledge through regular practice and fun activities such as Around the World. We have also tackled 2- and 3-digit multiplication by 2-digit numbers, the bus stop method for division, obtuse angles, tenths and hundredths, and long addition and subtraction. There has certainly been plenty to keep our mathematical brains busy!
Our WAU topic, Eco-Warriors, has taken us on a journey into environmental issues. We have explored the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling, as well as learning about climate change and global warming, including their causes and effects. We investigated the melting of polar ice caps through a practical experiment and discussed why this is such a serious issue for animals such as polar bears and emperor penguins. We then created posters highlighting ways we can help protect endangered animals affected by climate change.
In PE, we have been developing our team-building and coordination skills, learning the importance of communication, cooperation and supporting one another.
Throughout all of our learning we have been reflecting, tracking and setting goals within our weekly Learning Journals. These always inform our next steps and allow us to be honest with where we are currently at.
September has also given us opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. We took part in a sponsored walk in support of Combat Stress and enjoyed a fantastic Global Safety Day trip to the harbour, where we learned more about staying safe and the important work carried out around our local community.
It has been a fantastic start to Year 6, and we are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings!
