October: From learning about elapsed time to going old-school and stepping back in time.

What a fabulous October we have had! We have started to settle into Y5 really well and have been embracing every opportunity to learn.

In Literacy, we have been busy with creative writing, creating our own time-slip stories set in the Victorian era. We have used our trip to the Ulster Folk Museum last year to deepen our understanding of what school life was like during Victorian times. We have also been building our grammar knowledge by learning about 'to be' verbs, present participles and the present continuous tense, alongside lots of syllable work.

In Numeracy, we have been exploring column addition and subtraction, developing our understanding of division by 2, 3 and 5, and learning about elapsed time. We have also been working with bar graphs and look forward to exploring this topic in more detail during November.

As our topic comes to a close, we have loved learning more about Larne and getting out and about, as there is nothing better than exploring our town to understand its past and present. We have also been carrying out research on Larne's sports teams, services and businesses, and creating informative posters to showcase our learning.

We have had a blast taking part in all the exciting activities alongside our usual school day, including a fabulous drumming session with Wilson and enjoying the Wastebusters show, where we learned more about how to recycle our waste effectively.

I cannot wait to welcome everyone back after a lovely and well-deserved half-term break. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays!
