Primary 5 is off to a busy start!

It has been lovely welcoming Year 5 back for another great year together. We have also loved welcoming some new faces into our classroom. It has been great hearing all about their summer adventures and how much they are looking forward to the start of Key Stage 2!A

In Literacy, we have been growing in independence with our new spelling books, which have proved to be a great hit. We have been revising digraphs and breaking everything down to really understand more about a digraph’s job within a word. We have also been exploring how a dictionary works, along with doing lots of work on tenses and how we need to change a verb to make it fit the tense we are writing in. There has been such a buzz around our class novel, Fantastic Mr Fox, and all the exciting activities we have been doing based on the chapters we are reading.

In Numeracy, we have been real explorers, learning how compasses work and putting our knowledge to the test with some practical games in the playground. We have also been busy learning how to borrow in column subtraction, along with lots of place value work.

Our WAU topic is β€˜Where We Live’, and what could be more exciting than learning more about Larne! We have looked at how to read maps, along with having lots of Talking and Listening discussions about what we already know. We also did plenty of recycling, using toilet roll tubes to create a mini townscape for our display board.

We have also had lots of opportunities to get out and explore Larne. For Global Safety Day, we visited the P&O Ferries Terminal, where we got to explore inside a speed van and hear more about the fantastic work of the RNLI. We also completed our sponsored walk up the dreaded Snake at Town Park!

September has only made us even more excited for what we will learn in October!
